Several years on the "back burner," this is one of the last great expedition prospects on our planet and can only be realized due to the early work of the late river explorer, Ken Warren. Warren's team descended 1200 miles of the Upper Yangtze River, beginning at the source in 1986. It was featured in two parts by ABC Sports and Mutual of Omaha on the Spirit of Adventure series. It took nearly a decade of negotiations with Chinese authorities until permission for the exploration was granted. Having inherited the good relationships Ken was able to establish in China and India, we are very close to obtaining permission to run an unexplored river section on another Tibetan source stream, specifically, the crossing of the skirmished border between China and India, by way of the mighty Sangpo River, or Bramaputra, as they call it in India. Technical class 4, 5, and 6 river challenges might upset our plans. The best time of year to attempt this adventure will be November through January, when Himalayan water levels are at their most manageable. Torrential rainstorms of the Great Monsoons drain the Himalayan watersheds and flood the Indian subcontinent every year. Awesome in her power, she leaves death and destruction in her wake, holding hostage an already poverty stricken population every Monsoon Season. India's sacred river, the Ganges, is but one of the many streams that changes beyond recognition when the annual storms attack the region. The first raft expedition down the upper Ganges and its source tributaries was led by river explorer, Ken Warren, in 1976, and was featured on ABC's American Sportsman with an episode in 1977, starring Robert Duvall. Since then rafting has developed into a recreational reality. Hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of adventure travelers from around the world have challenged the mighty Ganga with the help of local guide companies. All raft operations shut down for the Monsoon Season. Due to our special expertise in river exploration, access to appropriate equipment , and the support from established international contacts, we are able to propose a first ever Monsoon Season descent of the Upper Ganges River. This is an exploratory challenge, during a time when regular water levels increase ten to twenty times. A series project for the first set of thirteen half hour shows. An introduction to geography and diverse human culture by way of the water. An Outdoor Adventure oriented concept which features wild and scenic rivers as gateways to worldwide, sometimes exotic travel destinations. Our earlier attempts to develop this concept as a series dates back to 1989 and resulted in the production of several demos and pilots, including our India special "Ganga Mayi-River of Return." Our 1997 pilot, "RAFTING THE RIM-Canada's Fraser River Watershed," won the Outstanding Creative Excellence Award, in the 1998. Flagstaff International Film Festival. Andreas Wallach's "RunningWater®",...the Next Generation," features a highly energetic approach to exploratory world travel, the challenge of Watersport and much more. The concept has a potential life span of several seasons. |
